Re: KPFA Marathon Highlight's 02/19/11 |
This is the new stuff from 12/23/70 (first set) that was played:
Deep Elem Blues
Beat It On Down the Line
I’m a King Bee
Me and My Uncle
Cumberland Blues/
What we had already (end of second set) -
Me And Bobby McGee
Dire Wolf
Good Lovin'>
Drums >
Good Lovin'
Casey Jones >
Uncle John's Band
I'd imagine there's quite a few more songs that haven't surfaced yet - although judging by the other December '70 shows, I wouldn't expect a big jam among them.

Re: KPFA Marathon Highlight's 02/19/11 |
I guess I'm not the only one who notices a bit of a slump in late 1970? I think the year just bled them dry. So much great music, but at times a grueling schedule. Then there was the death of parents, the Lenny/Mickey Hart fiasco and departure, etc. Even New Year's Eve 1970 is rather tame, imo. The end of the year just doesn't have that fire to it, not much jamming and in that sense similar to the first half of 1971. It's like they all got together on 2/18/71 to say a final goodbye to a certain era of music, then began a new chapter the very next day.
Weird though, late 1970 reminds me a lot of late 1969 in some ways.

Re: KPFA Marathon Highlight's 02/19/11 |
December '70 was a slump compared to the months preceding it... The Oct/Nov '70 eastern tour was the longest tour the Dead had been on, so that probably left them frazzled, but I'm not sure that explains it. Partly it may be the difference between the laid-back California shows and the high-energy November New York shows! The Dead's '71 style was pretty much underway in Dec '70 - shows with lots of songs, and maybe Good Lovin' would be the big jam of the evening. (And not one Dark Star!)
